Kickham Barracks is physically at the heart of Clonmel , and was established on the current site in the late 18th century.
After 230 years of service, the Defence Forces of Ireland vacated the barracks in March 2012. For many decades it has been a secure and private enclosure, suitable to the military functions of an army barracks. The site is currently in the middle of redevelopment to integrate the former barracks site into both a 3rd level educational campus and into the public domain of Clonmel as a model of urban regeneration, with the Civic Plaza opening in December 2022 as the latest stage of this.
The photos and recorded stories here are of those who served at Kickham Barracks, as well as images of the Barracks itself, taken by John D. Kelly in 2020, remaining as a monument to its rich history. The portraits show each current or former soldier holding an object that has a significance to their time at the barracks in Clonmel, and you can access their stories on Soundcloud.
Kickham Barracks was a hugely important part of Clonmel life and Clonmel Junction Arts Festival are delighted to have the opportunity to create a large-scale theatre production in September 2023 as part of the ART:2023 programme, closing out the Decade of Centenaries - From Out The Land. We'll be adding to this section as the project develops.
Sincere thanks to all who participated and supported this project, and special thanks to Paddy Farrell, the site caretaker.
From Out The Land is funded by the Arts Council of Ireland with the Dept of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media under ART:2023
